Xcoma Bar in China – raw and edgy

Xcoma bar in China has a great charachter. It is raw and edgy, in an non-formal environment. The space is long and narrow and covers only 50 sqm. The design highlights the shape of the space with the long wooden benches and the long bar encounter. The palette of white, wood and raw exposed concrete is extremely trendy, and gives the space a relaxed and non formal atmosphere. Simple but beautiful. Designed by KUU

Cliff house completed to perfection by Tadao Ando

On a cliff in southern Sri Lanka you can spot this architectural concrete dream of a house. It is completed to perfection by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando. It is a great balance of contrasts, the heavy concrete surface is perfectly emphasized by the open and spatial plan; light and shadow unfold the exciting structure. And there are no superlatives to describe the open roof terrace with the fantastic eternity pool.

Art Friday – NEW MATH by Craig Damrauer

The concept New Math by Craig Damrauer has been a favorite of mine for many years. Love the humor and simplicity behind the equations, specially “Modern Art = I could do that / Yeah, but you didn’t”. Some of the equations you can buy as posters from the online art shop 20×200. The work shown here is all for sale here.

The yellow patio house

Difficult not to notice this modern patio house in IJburg, Amsterdam. VMX Architects played with structure and colour and not the idea of blending in when they created this project. It is nothing like the other houses on the same row, but because it follows the same architectural shape as the other houses it somehow seem perfectly fitted in to the neighborhood. The bright yellow facade pops out and stands out as a beautiful piece of modern architecture. The inside is dominated by rough concrete and clean withe surfaces; and to bring the great statement of a beautiful facade, some yellow elements are added to the interior.

Los Soprano Pizzeria – Barcelona

Shipping containers as part of the interior is seen more and more, both in residential and retail projects. Los Soprano Pizzeria in Gava, Barcelona takes you to the harbour warehouses of New York City. The customer is to feel that they are in a wharf of merchandise transport. With its style of interior it  has captured a holistic and non formal atmosphere with the containers, wooden craters and the bold coloured industrial chairs.

From metal to wood

This apartment was refurbished first time in 2005 by the russian architect Peter Kostelov, using almost only industrial materials throughout the apartment. The original one bedroom studio apartment was reconstructed into a few more separate rooms including a spacious living room, a bedroom, study room, library, two wardrobe rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a lavatory and shower for guests. And as you can see the concept was given a very masculine and raw edge. Scroll down to see the transformation seven years later.

Seven years later the same apartment has gotten a softer look. The layout is still the same, but the metal materials have been replaced by timber walls. So the once cold and pretty harsh interior now appears warm and soft and a lot more light is allowed into the space. Now it balance perfectly between the feminine and masculine approach. It still got a industrial look, just a lot more softer. Never underestimate the power of materials and its structure. A great transformation!

Eclectic mix with colors and styles

This stylish home was showcased by the great San Francisco blogger SFGirlbyBay. Its not the typical home we show of here at Ideas To Steal, but I thought the madly and wonderful mix of color and period furniture with mid-centry modern icons was definitely worth the share. Love the bold pink sofa. If you want to see the rest of the home visit Light Location to see the rest of this georgian house.
